John Hellins

Portrait of John Hellins (1749-1827), British mathematician.

This subject should not be confused with his grandson John Hellins, 1829–1887, clergyman and entomologist.[1]

John Hellins FRS (c. 1749 – 5 April 1827) was a British autodidact, schoolteacher, mathematician, astronomer and country parson.[2]

  1. ^ John Hellins, 1829–87, clergyman and entomologist: Darwin correspondence project database Archived 27 September 2007 at the Wayback Machine, which lists this Hellins as one of Charles Darwin's correspondents. It is apparent that the two John Hellins were related, the first being the grandfather of the second. John Hellins b 1749 (wife Anne Brock) was vicar of Potterspury Northants, where one William Brock Hellins, also to become a clerk in holy orders, was born in 1798. John Hellins the entomologist was William's son, born in Bow, Devon c1829 (info taken from GRO vital records www.freebmd.org.uk, and census records for 1841–1851).
